Rising Cost of High-Quality Education

The cost of delivering a high-quality education combined with years of state funding falling short of inflation has placed the Platteville School District's ability to continue offering a comprehensive education program and exceptional student experience in jeopardy. Without revenue growth to match anticipated increases in expenses, our district will face sizable reductions to our programs, despite no future plans of adding staff or programming.

The bottom line is that the Platteville School District's revenue will not be enough to meet the increasing expenses of advancing our mission and achieving equity, growth, and excellence for all without support through a voter-approved operating referendum.

Operating Referendum: April 2, 2024

On Tuesday, April 2, 2024, residents of the Platteville School District will vote on an operating referendum question. An approved referendum would help the district address the financial challenges that largely result from the Wisconsin's school funding formula. It would also allow our district to continue to recruit and retain top-notch teaching staff, fortify and expand our enrichment programs, and maintain its current staffing levels.

How this Referendum Differs from the November 2022 Referendum

The April 2024 Operating Referendum differs greatly from the November 2022 Capital Referendum supported by our residents. The graphic below shows what each referendum can fund. Capital referendums allow the district to take on debt in order to improve facilities where an Operating Referendum allows the district to secure additional funding for future years for all of the needs listed below.

Any funding secured from the Capital Referendum in November 2022 can not be allocated to any future operating expenses required to fund the school district.

Referendum Question: Ballot Information

The question on the ballot asks voters to approve a non-recurring operating referendum that would provide the district with additional funding for the next five years. These funds would be used to protect the tradition of excellence that the Platteville School District is known for including its robust student programs and services as well as the ability to retain and attract high-quality staff.

Question:  Shall the School District of Platteville, Grant, Lafayette and Iowa Counties, Wisconsin be authorized to exceed the revenue limit specified in Section 121.91, Wisconsin Statutes, by $1,500,000 for the 2024-2025 school year, by $1,800,000 for the 2025-2026 school year, by $2,100,000 for the 2026-2027 school year, by $2,400,000 for the 2027-2028 school year and by $2,700,000 for the 2028-2029 school year, for non-recurring purposes to maintain educational programs and operations of the District?
