SPECIAL EDUCATION CHILD'S RIGHTS
Platteville School District
In the last few years a great deal of attention has been focused on special education, particularly on the right of all children to a free, appropriate public education regardless of the type or severity of their handicap. Both federal and state law guarantees this right. Federal legislation (Individuals With Disabilities Education Act) also requires that school districts locate, identify, and serve all children with exceptional educational needs (EEN) who are not receiving special education services. This effort is being carried out by the Platteville School District.
The Platteville School District is looking for children from birth - 21 years of age who have exceptional educational needs (EEN) and are not presently being served. These exceptional educational needs (EEN) may include such problems as: physical or orthopedic disabilities, cognitive disabilities or other developmental disabilities, hearing impairment, visual handicaps, speech and language disabilities, emotional or behavioral problems, learning disabilities, autism, traumatic brain injury, and other health impairments.
After a referral is made to the local school district, a screening is done. If the child has a need, a more complete evaluation is done by an Individual Education Planning team (IEP team) in the school. These evaluations are free of charge. All information sent to the schools is kept confidential.
Persons who know of a child from the age of birth - 21 years who may need special educational services may call the Platteville School District Special Services Office at 342-4025.
