Strep Throat
A throat culture (swab or the throat) is done to detect the presence of strep (Streptococcus) bacteria.
SYMPTOMS OF STREP THROAT: May include one or more of the following
Treatment for a sore throat:
1. Get plenty of rest; avoid unnecessary activities.
2. Do not attend school or work until you are free of symptoms.
3. Take plenty of fluids; at least 8-10 glasses a day. Suggested
fluids include: juices, clear soups, carbonated beverages and jello.
4. Gargle with a mixture of 1/2 tsp. salt and 1 cup (8 oz..) warm water.
Do as often as desired to help relieve soreness. Commercial mouthwashes are
not recommended as theymay be drying and irritating to the already irritated throat.
5. For fever and/or pain, a non-aspirin product may be taken unless you are allergic to it.
6. Please avoid being around other people - respiratory diseases are contagious.
If the results are positive for strep throat, do the following:
1. Avoid exposure and direct contact with others
2. Remain at home until free of symptoms, AT LEAST 24 hours after the medication begins (regardless as to what type of medication is prescribed).
PREVENTION:
To prevent rheumatic fever and to help prevent recurrence of strep throat, the medication from your physician must be taken exactly as prescribed. Do not share this medication with other family members as there is not enough for two people. Do not save any medicine for later use. There should not be any left over. If you forgot to give a dose, give it as soon as you remember and space the rest of the doses out evenly for the rest of that day. Please also keep it out of the reach of children Follow the instructions of your physician.
Those who are in close contact with a diagnosed case of strep throat should be cultured IF they also have symptoms indicating a possible strep infection - routine culturing is not recommended for contacts. Strep is most common among children, especially young children.
If the results are negative, but your symptoms persist, contact your physician.
